Luckily, interruptions can be avoided by using good quality hardware, resilient and effective network design and taking the precautions to protect the network and servers from undesirable attention from external agencies.

The L3n network security page gives an overview regarding the precautions that should be taken to protect your network and computers from external agencies but how can you be sure it is being effective?

The answer is to ask L3n to perform a network penetration test. This service scans your network and provides a comprehensive report which describes the machines/services found along with any vulnerabilities.

There are two test scenarios L3n can perform for you:

• Externally - L3n would perform a penetration test to confirm the security of your network firewall device to determine how vulnerable your network is to attack from the Internet. The external scan is totally unobtrusive (aside from causing entries in Firewall and IDS logs). Obviously this is extremely useful for establishing security problems, Firewall configuration issues and web/mail/dns server vulnerabilities. This report in turn can be presented to your customers as proof that your business takes security and their data integrity seriously.
• Internally - a specialist piece of analysis equipment would be installed temporarily on your internal network. This would allow L3n to perform a similar test but from within your network borders. The internal scan produces a deeper report as it tries to penetrate a range of IP addresses and establish server and service vulnerabilities from inside the network. Showing the resultant report to your customers really underlines your commitment to their data security in addition to your own.

On the completion of each test you will receive a report detailing potential vulnerabilities to your network. You can either choose to rectify these yourselves, engage L3n or any other third party security consultant to carry out any remedial work.

Current pricing for external testing and production of a report is £200 +VAT per IP address with a FREE re-test within 30 days alternatively we can offer £1000 for blocks of 16 addresses. The re-test will allow you to check the effectiveness of any security amendments that may have been necessary.

Pricing for internal testing is on a case by case basis as an onsite visit is required to set up the internal testing system etc.
