I've long been a fan of the secure two-factor token called 'Yubikey', details of which can found at yubico.com. The guys at Yubico have kindly generated a security module for the Drupal CMS to allow use of the Yubikey token. I've now installed and configured this module and so, this means that to log into this website we now need, not only our username and password but also access to the Yubikey registered on the site. The Yubikey acts like a USB keyboard so no drivers needed there.
The Yubikey sends a 'one off' stream of data to the website which then goes and checks the information supplied with the Yubico authentication servers. The servers know what the stream should look like and if it matches OK then access is granted to the website else it's not.
We're testing using the Yubikey as an economic Two-Factor Authentication system for VPNs and system logins.
The Yubikeys are a fantastic technology. They need no batteries and are practically indestructable. The security they bring is fantastic. If you want more detail on how they can be used to secure your website, or VPN etc make sure you get in contact with us.
