Global IPv6 Day: 8th June 2011

We've had several enquiries about how people can best trial their fledgling IPv6 services. A good first step would be to participate in "IPv6 day" on 8th June 2011. On the 8th June 2011 some major organisations will offer their content via IPv6 giving v6 users the opportunity to test their v6 services and connections "in anger".

And I guess the BBC must follow our newsletter as on the day our IPv6 newsletter was sent out they ran the following story: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12334734

Explaining that the organisation running the assigment of IPv4 addresses in Asia-Pac (APNIC) has requested another large block of numbers leaving just the last five blocks of 16 million addresses each. The central authority (Icann) states that when only five blocks of addresses remain they will be quickly distributed to regional agencies.

A ceremony to mark the handing over of the last five blocks of addresses, known as /8s, took place on February 3rd.

We have a brief primer on IPv6 and the various governing bodies involved on the L3n website: http://www.l3n.co.uk/ipv6
